Teensy 4.0 Development Board

The Teensy 4.0 development board features an ARM Cortex-M7 processor running at 600 MHz, powered by the NXP iMXRT1062 chip, making it one of the fastest microcontroller platforms available today — nearly ten times faster than the Teensy 3.2. The NXP iMXRT1062 is a powerful “cross-over” processor that combines the functionality of a microcontroller with the performance levels of a microcomputer. The Teensy 4.0 is ideal for applications requiring large flash memory, high RAM capacity, intensive data processing, dual high-speed USB support, and advanced graphics capabilities.

When running at 600 MHz, Teensy 4.0 consumes approximately 100 mA current.

Teensy 4.0 provides support for dynamic clock scaling. Unlike traditional microcontrollers, where changing the clock speed can affect baud rates and timing accuracy, Teensy 4.0 hardware along with Teensyduino software support ensures Arduino timing functions continue to work correctly during speed changes. Serial baud rates, audio streaming sample rates, and functions such as delay(), millis(), IntervalTimer, and elapsedMillis remain accurate even while the CPU frequency changes dynamically.

The board also includes an intelligent power shut-off feature. By connecting a pushbutton to the On/Off pin, the 3.3V power supply can be completely disabled by holding the button for 5 seconds and turned back on with a brief press. If a coin cell battery is connected to VBAT, the RTC continues maintaining accurate date and time even when the power is switched off.

Another major advantage of the Teensy 4.0 development board is its overclocking capability, allowing users to push performance well beyond 600 MHz for demanding embedded applications.

Performance & Benchmark:

Built around the high-performance Cortex-M7 architecture, the Teensy 4.0 delivers exceptional processing capability for real-time embedded systems, DSP, robotics, audio processing, and AI edge applications. Developers comparing performance metrics often look at the STM32H7 CoreMark score, and the Teensy 4.0 stands out competitively in this category with impressive benchmark-level processing efficiency for its compact size.

Teensy 4.0 Price & Applications:

The Teensy 4.0 price makes it an excellent choice for developers, students, and professionals looking for high-speed embedded computing at an affordable cost. Its compact footprint and advanced peripheral support make it suitable for industrial automation, IoT devices, robotics, high-speed data logging, and audio synthesis projects.
